How to Assemble a T-Style Guitar: Body, Neck and Setup

A Telecaster is the most honest guitar ever designed. There is no carve, no binding on the classic version, no cavity you cannot see the purpose of. Leo Fender built it to be manufactured quickly and repaired easily, and that intent is exactly why it is the best guitar to assemble from parts.

Compared with an S-Style build you lose the tremolo balancing act, the spring cavity, one pickup and roughly half the solder joints. What you gain is a couple of Telecaster-specific things to get right: the bridge plate has less room for error than a Strat tremolo, and grounding works slightly differently.

The heavy skilled work — routing, fretting, levelling, crowning, nut cutting — is already done. What is left is about seven hours of careful assembly, in which six measurements decide whether you end up with a great guitar or a frustrating one.

This guide is written around Music Buddies T-Style bodies and T-Style necks, but the method works for any Fender-compatible parts.

Read Part 2 before you order anything. Most disappointing assembly builds fail at the shopping stage — a bridge that doesn't match the drilled holes, tuners that don't fit the peg holes, a control plate that doesn't suit the switch. Twenty minutes of checking saves a fortnight of returns.


Part 1 — What you are starting from

1.1 What the body already gives you

Music Buddies T-Style bodies are solid alder, typically 2.0–2.4 kg, in nitrocellulose gloss or polyurethane gloss. What matters for assembly:

  • Cavities are already routed — bridge and neck pickup routs, control cavity, jack bore.
  • Bridge holes and neck holes are already drilled.
  • The neck pocket is cut to Fender-compatible dimensions and fits Fender necks as well as Music Buddies necks.

Variants change your parts list, so identify yours:

1.2 What the neck already gives you

Music Buddies T-Style necks are one-piece roasted maple with a rosewood or maple fingerboard. Note these down before ordering anything else:

A headstock-adjustable double-acting truss rod is a real quality-of-life upgrade on a Telecaster specifically. Vintage Tele necks adjust at the heel, which means unbolting the neck, adjusting, rebolting, retuning and repeating until you get it right. You will not have to do that.

Roasted maple has had its moisture driven out by torrefaction, which makes it noticeably more stable against humidity swings than untreated maple. On a bolt-on neck that mostly shows up as a guitar that needs fewer truss rod tweaks through the year.

1.3 Honest expectations

Part 2 — The compatibility checklist (read before ordering)

2.1 Which bridge fits your body?

This is the Telecaster's one genuinely fiddly compatibility question, because Tele bridge plates vary more than Strat tremolos do.

Check three things on your body:

  1. How many bridge mounting holes? Vintage-style ashtray plates typically use 3 screws; modern plates typically use 4. They are not interchangeable without new holes.
  2. String-through or top-load? Look at the back of the body. Six ferrule holes = string-through, and you need a bridge plate with matching string holes. No ferrule holes = top-load, and you need a plate that anchors the strings itself.
  3. String spacing. Modern Tele bridges are commonly 54 mm (2 1/8") at the saddles. Measure your body's ferrule spacing and match it.

Then choose from Tele bridges with those three answers in hand.

2.2 Three saddles or six?

A real decision, not just an aesthetic one.

If you play a lot of open chords high up the neck, or you are fussy about tuning, go six-saddle or use compensated barrels. If you want the authentic thing and can live with a few cents of error, three barrels are the sound.

2.3 Do the tuners match the peg holes?

Music Buddies necks are drilled 10 mm, the modern standard.

  • Modern sealed tuners sized for a 10 mm (25/64") hole → fit directly.
  • Vintage-style tuners with 6 mm posts → need conversion bushings to adapt to a 10 mm bore.
  • Vintage split-shaft tuners for 8.7 mm (11/32") holes → loose in a 10 mm hole. Avoid or bush.

Also check the mounting style: tuners from tuning machines are either 2-pin or 45° single screw, and these need different headstock drilling.

Never force a bushing into an undersized hole. Pressing a bushing into a hole that is too small is one of very few unrecoverable mistakes in guitar assembly — it splits headstocks. Measure the hole, measure the bushing, and if it is tight, ream the hole rather than hammering the bushing.

2.4 Control plate and switch

The control plate carries the volume pot, tone pot and 3-way switch. Check:

  • The plate's switch slot matches your switch style.
  • The pot hole spacing matches your pots.
  • The plate's mounting screw positions match the body's drilled holes.

2.5 Wire it yourself, or buy it done?

Loose parts means: pots (250 kΩ audio for single coils), a capacitor (0.047 µF is the classic Tele value), a 3-way switch, an output jack and a jack plate or Tele-style jack cup.

Note the Tele-specific jack. A vintage Telecaster uses a cup that presses into a bore in the side of the lower bout, held by a clip — not a flat plate like a Strat. Check which your body is routed for before ordering.

2.6 The small parts people forget

  • Neck plate and four neck bolts
  • String ferrules, if your body is string-through and the bridge doesn't include them
  • Screws and fasteners — control plate, pickup, bridge and jack screws
  • Strap buttons
  • String tree — a flat Fender headstock needs one
  • Neck pickup cover and mounting screws with springs or tubing
  • Knobs and a switch tip
  • A set of strings

2.7 The buying order that saves you money

  1. Body first — it fixes your routing, bridge hole pattern and string-through/top-load choice.
  2. Neck second, matched to the pocket. Radius and fret wire are decided here and cannot be changed later.
  3. Bridge third, matched to the body's hole count, string anchoring and spacing.
  4. Tuners fourth, matched to the 10 mm peg holes and your mounting preference.
  5. Electronics and small parts last.

Part 3 — Tools required

3.1 Essential

  • Screwdrivers: PH1, PH2 and small flatheads. Buy decent ones — a cam-out on a chrome screw is permanent and visible.
  • Digital caliper, 150 mm — verifying hole sizes, measuring string height.
  • Steel rule, 600 mm with mm and 1/64" graduations, long enough to span nut to bridge.
  • Machinist's rule graduated from the very end — a rule with dead length cannot measure action.
  • Feeler gauge set, 0.05–1.0 mm.
  • Radius gauges matching your fingerboard.
  • Truss rod wrench for your neck's rod.
  • Hex keys / small flathead for bridge saddles.
  • Nut drivers, 10 mm and 7 mm, for pot and jack nuts.
  • Cordless drill with a 2 mm bit for pilot holes.
  • String winder and side cutters.
  • Tuner — strobe app or good clip-on.
  • Soldering iron, 30–60 W, temperature-controlled, and 60/40 rosin-core solder, if wiring from loose parts.
  • Multimeter.

3.2 Strongly recommended

  • Neck rest or body cradle, or a folded towel.
  • Masking tape around every screw entry point on a finished body.
  • Nut lubricant — pencil graphite works.
  • Microfibre cloths and a polish suited to your finish.
  • Magnetic parts dish.

3.3 Not needed

No fret files, no levelling beam, no nut files, no router, no drill press. If you feel you need them, you have a parts-match problem, not a technique problem — stop and diagnose.


Part 4 — The measurements that decide whether it plays

Six checks, all done before final assembly while parts can still be swapped.

4.1 The neck pocket fit

Drop the heel into the pocket with no bolts.

  • It should seat fully under light hand pressure and lift out without tools.
  • No visible side gap. A 0.05 mm feeler gauge should not slide in alongside the heel.

Too tight? On a nitro body, finish build-up on the pocket walls is almost always the cause. Do not force it — scrape the walls lightly with a sharp chisel held flat, taking finish only.

Too loose? A side gap lets the neck shift under tension, which shows up as drifting intonation and strings wandering off the fingerboard edge. A thin veneer shim on one wall is a proper fix.

4.2 Scale length — verify, don't assume

Your bridge holes are pre-drilled, so this is verification. It is the most important check in the build.

  1. Bolt the neck in loosely and mount the bridge plate.
  2. Measure from the front face of the nut to the centre of the 12th fret crown. On a 25.5" scale neck: 323.85 mm.
  3. Double it: 647.7 mm — your scale line.
  4. Measure nut face to the high-E saddle break point. With the saddle near mid-travel it should land about 1.0–1.5 mm past the scale line — roughly 648.7–649.2 mm.
  5. The low-E saddle wants to sit about 2.5–3.2 mm past the scale line.

On a 3-saddle bridge, check the barrel positions as a group rather than individually — you are confirming that the barrels have travel in both directions, not that each string is perfect.

If saddles are already at the end of their travel before intonation, the bridge is mounted too far forward or back for that neck. Stop and contact your supplier rather than drilling new holes.

4.3 String lateral alignment

Fit the outer two strings only, tuned roughly to pitch.

  • Each should sit 3.0–3.5 mm inside the fingerboard edge at the last fret.
  • Sight down from the headstock: the strings should look symmetrical.

Both strings off to one side → the neck is rotated in the pocket. Loosen, nudge, retighten.

Asymmetric spacing → your bridge string spacing doesn't match your neck width. This matters more on a Telecaster than a Strat, because the bridge plate's raised side walls and pickup aperture leave very little room to correct it afterwards.

4.4 Fingerboard height over the body

With neck bolted and bridge mounted, check that you can reach the target action of 1.6 mm at the 17th fret with saddle adjustment left in both directions.

Strings far too high with saddles fully down → the pocket is too shallow for that combination. A thin tapered neck shim at the heel end of the pocket is the correct remedy, and carries no stigma — Fender ships shims from the factory.

Strings too low with saddles fully up → pocket too deep. Rarer, harder to fix.

Telecaster bridges — vintage ones especially, with their tall barrel saddles — have a narrower useful height window than a Strat tremolo, so this check earns its place.

4.5 Neck relief

Fit and tune all six strings, then:

  1. Capo the 1st fret.
  2. Hold the low E at the last fret.
  3. Measure between the top of the 8th fret and the bottom of the string.

Fender's published factory figures. With a headstock-adjustable double-acting rod this is a 30-second job — quarter turns, retune, remeasure.

4.6 Nut slot height

The nut arrives pre-slotted, but slot depth is cut for a typical gauge. Verify.

Capo at the 3rd fret and look at each string over the top of the 1st fret. You want 0.05–0.10 mm — just visible daylight.

  • Too high → first-position open chords sound sharp and feel stiff. Deepening slots needs nut files; if you don't have them, that is a tech job.
  • Too low → the open string buzzes on the 1st fret. Needs a shim under the nut or a new nut.

Part 5 — Step-by-step assembly

Phase 1 — Unpack, inspect, dry-fit

  1. Inspect body and neck under good light before assembling anything. Photograph anything that concerns you — returns are far easier before you have drilled and screwed.
  2. Sight down the fingerboard from the headstock. Near-straight with slight relief is normal.
  3. Dry-fit the neck in the pocket (§4.1). No bolts.
  4. Dry-fit the bridge plate in its drilled holes. Confirm the screw pattern and, on a string-through body, that the plate's string holes line up with the ferrule holes.
  5. Offer up the control plate and confirm it matches the body's drilled holes.
  6. Only now conclude you have the right parts.

Phase 2 — Tuners

Do this while the neck is still off the body — far easier to handle.

  1. Support the headstock flat on a padded surface. Never let it overhang unsupported while you press anything.
  2. Fit the bushings. Press fits go in with a padded clamp, slowly and squarely. If it needs force, stop and measure.
  3. Insert the tuners from the back and align all six posts. Sight along the row.
  4. Mark and fix:
    • 2-pin tuners — the pins locate themselves; press gently and evenly.
    • 45° screw tuners — mark each pilot with an awl, then drill 2 mm to about 8 mm depth. Pilot holes in a headstock are mandatory; roasted maple is hard and splits.
  5. Drive screws snug, not tight.

Phase 3 — String tree

A Fender headstock is flat and in-plane with the fingerboard, so the strings need help to break properly over the nut. That is what the tree is for.

  1. Standard Telecaster placement is a single tree over the B and high E pair.
  2. Pilot-drill 2 mm, fit the tree with its spacer.
  3. Check the strings clear the tree's underside without binding — a binding string tree is a common and maddening cause of tuning instability.

Phase 4 — Neck to body

  1. Clean the pocket; scrape any finish build-up.
  2. Seat the neck fully by hand.
  3. Fit the neck plate and start all four bolts by hand before tightening any.
  4. Tighten in a cross pattern — corner, diagonal opposite, then the remaining two — in stages.
  5. Snug, not tight. Firm wood-to-wood contact is the goal. Over-tightening compresses the wood, dishes a nitro finish under the plate, and can strip the heel thread. If a bolt spins without gaining resistance, the thread has gone.

Phase 5 — Ferrules and bridge

On a string-through body:

  1. Press the ferrules into the back holes. They should sit flush or a hair below the surface. If one is proud, it will dig into your leg forever — seat it properly.
  2. If a ferrule is loose, a drop of thin cyanoacrylate around the flange edge holds it.

Then the bridge:

  1. Mount the bridge plate to its drilled holes. Snug the screws so the plate sits flat with no rocking.
  2. On a vintage ashtray plate, fit the bridge pickup to the plate before final mounting — it is much easier with the plate off the body.
  3. Confirm the saddles have adjustment travel in both directions (§4.2).

Phase 6 — Pickups and jack

  1. Neck pickup mounts into the body rout — on a vintage-style Tele it screws to the rout floor through the pickup's mounting flanges, under a chrome cover. Set it low for now.
  2. Bridge pickup mounts to the bridge plate with screws and springs or tubing.
  3. Jack: if your body takes a Tele-style cup, press it into its bore and secure the clip. If it takes a flat jack plate, pilot-drill 2 mm and screw it on.
  4. Fit strap buttons with 2 mm pilots.
  5. Every screw into this finished body gets a pilot hole and masking tape around the entry point. A slipped screwdriver leaves a scar you will look at for the life of the guitar.

Phase 7 — Electronics

If you bought a wiring harness: mount it to the control plate, connect the two pickups and the jack, and skip to step 6.

If you are wiring from loose parts — standard modern 3-way Telecaster circuit (bridge / both / neck):

  1. Shield the cavities with copper foil tape, seams overlapping and soldered together. Optional, but a single-coil guitar benefits audibly.
  2. Mount the volume pot, tone pot and 3-way switch to the control plate.
  3. Wire it up:
    • Bridge pickup hot → one switch input; neck pickup hot → the other switch input.
    • Switch common → volume pot input lug (lug 3).
    • Volume output (lug 2) → jack tip.
    • Volume lug 1 → ground.
    • Tone pot wiper → 0.047 µF capacitor → ground, fed from the volume input lug.
    • All pickup grounds, both pot casings, the bridge plate ground and the jack sleeve → one single common ground point.
  4. The bridge ground is Telecaster-specific and important. On a Tele the bridge plate must be grounded so that touching the strings quiets the guitar. On most vintage-style builds the bridge pickup's own baseplate, clamped under the bridge plate, provides this connection. Verify it with a multimeter — continuity between the bridge plate and the jack sleeve. If there is none, run a dedicated ground wire from under the bridge plate to your ground point. Discovering this after the guitar is strung is a genuine nuisance.
  5. Cap choice: 0.047 µF is the classic Tele value and rolls off more treble; 0.022 µF is gentler. Both are correct.
  6. Test before closing up. With the meter: each pot should read about 250 kΩ end to end; check continuity from each pickup through the switch to the jack tip; confirm no continuity between tip and sleeve with the volume up; confirm bridge-plate-to-sleeve continuity. Then plug into an amp and tap each pickup with a screwdriver.
  7. Dress the wires so nothing is pinched, and fit the control plate screws snug only.

Phase 8 — Strings and first tune

  1. Lubricate the nut slots with pencil graphite.
  2. On a string-through body, feed each string from the back through its ferrule. Wind neatly down the post so the string leaves the post low, improving the break angle over the nut.
  3. Tune up slowly in stages, letting the neck take tension gradually. Come up to pitch two or three times as things settle.
  4. Stretch each string gently and retune.

Phase 9 — Setup

Now work through the checks properly in this order: relief → bridge height → saddle radius → pickup height → intonation → nut check.

Pickup height is measured from the pole piece to the bottom of the string with the last fret held down. A Tele neck pickup under a chrome cover is easy to set too high — the string swing is widest there, so if you hear warble or dead sustain, drop it.

On intonation with a 3-saddle bridge: you cannot get all six strings perfect, so angle each barrel to share the error between the two strings it carries. Prioritise whichever string you use most in open chords. Compensated brass barrels — angled from the factory — get you most of the way there without giving up the vintage look.

Part 7 — The mistakes that cost people money

  1. Ordering a bridge without counting the body's mounting holes. 3-screw and 4-screw plates are not interchangeable.
  2. Ordering a top-load bridge for a string-through body, or the reverse.
  3. Forgetting the bridge ground. The guitar hums until you touch the strings — except it won't quiet down, because there is no ground path. Check with a meter before assembly.
  4. Buying tuners without checking the 10 mm peg hole — or forcing an oversized bushing into a headstock.
  5. Driving screws without pilot holes. Roasted maple and alder both split.
  6. Over-tightening neck bolts, dishing the finish and stripping threads.
  7. Ferrules left proud of the back surface. They will dig into you every time you play sitting down.
  8. Expecting perfect intonation from three saddles. It is not possible. Accept it, fit compensated barrels, or go six-saddle.
  9. Assuming the pre-drilled bridge position is right without measuring. It usually is. Verify anyway.
  10. Skipping setup and blaming the parts.

Part 8 — Frequently asked questions

Is a Telecaster easier to assemble than a Stratocaster? Yes, meaningfully. There is no tremolo to install and balance, no spring cavity, one fewer pickup, and roughly half the solder joints. The two things a Tele adds are a slightly fussier bridge-plate compatibility question and the bridge ground connection. For a first build, a T-Style is the shorter path to a finished guitar.

Which Telecaster bridge fits my body? Answer three questions first: how many mounting holes does the body have (3 for most vintage ashtray plates, 4 for most modern), is it string-through or top-load, and what is the string spacing (commonly 54 mm / 2 1/8" on modern bridges). Match all three. A bridge that gets two out of three right will still need new holes drilled.

How do I ground a Telecaster bridge? The bridge plate must have electrical continuity to the jack sleeve, so that touching the strings quiets the guitar. On most vintage-style builds the bridge pickup's baseplate, clamped under the bridge plate, provides this. Check it with a multimeter before you string up. If there is no continuity, run a dedicated ground wire from beneath the bridge plate to your common ground point.

Can I intonate a 3-saddle Telecaster properly? Not perfectly — each barrel carries two strings that need different lengths, so the geometry forbids it. What you can do is angle each barrel so the error is shared between its two strings, prioritising whichever you play most in open position. Compensated brass barrels, angled at the factory, get you most of the way there. A 6-saddle plate solves it outright at the cost of the vintage look.

Will a 22-fret neck fit a T-Style body? Yes. The heel is the same 55.6 mm Fender-compatible width, so the pocket fit is unchanged. The fingerboard simply overhangs slightly further over the body. Unlike a Stratocaster there is no full pickguard to foul, so this is even less of an issue on a Tele.

Which tuners fit a 10 mm peg hole? Most modern sealed tuners are made for a 10 mm (25/64") hole and fit directly. Vintage-style tuners with 6 mm posts need conversion bushings. Separately, check whether they mount with 2 locating pins or a single 45° screw — these need different headstock drilling.

How tight should neck bolts be? Snug, in a cross pattern, in stages. Firm wood-to-wood contact between heel and pocket is all you need. Over-tightening compresses the wood, dishes the finish under the neck plate, and can strip the thread in the heel.

Do I need to shield the cavities? Not required, but worthwhile. Single-coil pickups pick up mains hum and interference readily, and copper foil in the control cavity and pickup routs, with soldered seams tied to ground, makes an audible difference — especially near computers, dimmers and lighting.

My neck feels tight in the pocket. Should I force it? No. On a nitro-finished body the cause is nearly always finish build-up on the pocket walls. Scrape them lightly with a sharp chisel held flat, taking finish only, until the neck seats with light hand pressure. Forcing chips the finish and can compress the wood, which loosens the joint permanently.

How long does a T-Style assembly take? Five to eight hours of actual work over two sessions, plus an hour or two of setup and a few days of returning to retune as the neck settles. Lead time on made-to-order parts is usually the longest part of the calendar.
