Building a Stratocaster from raw timber is the single best way to understand why the instrument works. Leo Fender's 1954 design is a masterclass in production engineering: flat surfaces, bolted joints, a scratch-plate that carries the entire electrical assembly. Nothing is carved where it could be routed, nothing is glued where it could be screwed.

That same logic makes it an excellent first scratch build — but "achievable" is not "forgiving". A Stratocaster lives or dies on about a dozen measurements, and if you get the relationship between the nut, the frets and the bridge wrong by two millimetres, no amount of setup will rescue it.

This guide covers a genuine scratch build: you start with rough-sawn boards and finish with a playable guitar. Every dimension is given metric first with the original imperial spec in brackets, because Fender's drawings were and still are in inches, and the numbers only make sense when you can see both.

A note on tolerances. Fender's own published dimensions have shifted across eras, factories and model lines. Vintage-spec neck pockets are 15.9 mm (5/8") deep; current production frequently runs 17.3–17.5 mm (0.680–0.690"). Treat every hardware figure in this guide as a starting reference and verify it against the actual part in your hand with a caliper. The wood is permanent; the catalogue number is not.


Part 1 — What you are actually building

1.2 Skill level, time and budget

Skill level Advanced. You need confident router, hand-plane and file work.

Wood + hardware €280–€600 depending on timber and pickup choice.

If your budget is tighter, build the neck from a pre-slotted fingerboard and a pre-cut truss rod channel — you keep 80% of the learning for 40% of the tool cost.


Part 2 — Tools required

Split into what you genuinely cannot substitute, and what makes life easier. Anything marked [critical] determines whether the guitar plays; the rest determines how long it takes.

2.1 Measuring, marking and layout

  • Digital caliper, 150 mm, 0.01 mm resolution [critical] — the single most-used tool in the build.
  • Steel rule, 600 mm, with mm and 1/64" graduations [critical] — you need one long enough to span nut to bridge.
  • Machinist's rule, 150 mm, graduated from the very end (no dead length) [critical] — for action and pickup heights.
  • Precision square, 100–150 mm engineer's square [critical]
  • Feeler gauge set, 0.05–1.0 mm [critical] — neck relief is a 0.25 mm measurement.
  • Straightedge, 450–600 mm, certified flat [critical] — for checking the neck and levelling frets.
  • Notched straightedge for 25.5" scale — sits over the frets so you read the fingerboard, not the fretwork. Strongly recommended.
  • Radius gauges (7.25 / 9.5 / 10 / 12 / 16") [critical]
  • String action gauge (stepped, in 1/64" or 0.5 mm)
  • Marking knife and 0.3 mm mechanical pencil
  • Centre punch and awl
  • Digital angle gauge — for confirming the pocket and heel are truly 0°.

2.2 Wood removal

  • Router, 1/4" or 1/2" collet, minimum 1,000 W [critical] — a plunge base is close to essential for cavities.
  • Router bits: 12.7 mm (1/2") straight flush-trim with top bearing; 12.7 mm pattern bit with bottom bearing; 6.35 mm (1/4") straight for tight corners and the truss rod channel; 3.2 mm (1/8") straight for wiring channels; roundover bits 3.2 mm (1/8") and 6.35 mm (1/4"); a 12.7 mm bearing-guided rebate set.   • Bandsaw, 300 mm+ throat, 6–13 mm blade — or a jigsaw with a long fine blade and a lot of patience.
  • Drill press [critical for the bridge and ferrule holes] — hand-held drilling of string-through ferrules will not stay perpendicular.
  • Cordless drill/driver
  • Brad-point drill set, 1–10 mm plus Forstner bits at 9.5 mm (3/8"), 8 mm, 22 mm and 25 mm (for pot and jack holes).
  • Hand planes: a No. 4 smoothing plane and a No. 5 jack plane [critical]; a spokeshave and a small block plane for the neck carve.
  • Cabinet scrapers, 0.6–0.8 mm, and a burnisher.
  • Rasps and files: a coarse cabinet rasp, a 4-in-hand rasp, needle files.
  • Random orbital sander, 125 mm, plus a full grit range 80 → 400.
  • Sanding blocks: cork-faced flat block, and radius sanding blocks in your chosen radius, 300–400 mm long [critical].

2.3 Fretting and fretwork — the specialist set

This is where corners cannot be cut. Bad fretwork is the number one reason a home-built guitar is unplayable.

  • Fret saw with 0.58 mm (0.023") kerf and a depth stop [critical]
  • Fret slotting mitre box / slotting template for 25.5" [critical] — or a CNC-slotted board.
  • Fret bender / fret radius tool [critical] — over-radius the wire relative to the board.
  • Fret tang nippers (flush-cutting) [critical]
  • Fret hammer, brass or dead-blow, or a fret press with cauls [critical] — a press gives more consistent seating.
  • Fret levelling beam, 400 mm, aluminium, with self-adhesive abrasive [critical]
  • Fret crowning file (2–3 mm concave) [critical]

2.4 Gluing and clamping

  • Titebond Original or hide glue for the fingerboard and body joints
  • Thin cyanoacrylate (for fret ends and small repairs)
  • 6 × F-clamps (150–300 mm), 4 × sash/bar clamps for a body glue-up
  • A cambered fingerboard gluing caul matching your radius
  • Waxed paper, glue brush, damp rags

2.5 Finishing

  • Grain filler (for ash), sanding sealer
  • Nitrocellulose, 2K polyurethane, or water-based acrylic — plus the correct thinners
  • Spray gun (HVLP) and compressor, or aerosols
  • Respirator with organic-vapour cartridges [critical — non-negotiable], nitrile gloves, eye protection
  • Tack cloths, 400–2,000 grit wet-and-dry paper
  • Polishing compound and either a foam pad on a drill or a lot of elbow grease

2.6 Electronics and assembly

  • Temperature-controlled soldering iron, 30–60 W, chisel tip [critical] — a fixed 25 W pencil will not heat a pot casing.
  • 60/40 rosin-core solder, 0.7–1.0 mm
  • Wire strippers, small side cutters, needle-nose pliers
  • Multimeter [critical] — for checking pot values and continuity before you close the guitar up
  • Heat-shrink tubing, cloth-covered or PVC hookup wire (22 AWG)
  • Screwdriver set: PH1, PH2, and a set of small flatheads
  • Nut driver / socket set (10 mm, 7 mm) for pot and jack nuts
  • Truss rod wrench matching your rod (typically 3.2 mm / 1/8" or 4 mm hex)
  • String winder and a tuner (strobe or a good clip-on) [critical for intonation]

2.7 Safety

Dust extraction on the bandsaw and sander, hearing protection, and a router used with both hands and a stable workpiece. Rosewood, cocobolo and ebony dust are sensitisers — mask up even for hand sanding.


Part 3 — Materials and parts

3.1 Timber

Moisture content must be 6–8%. Buy a €25 pin moisture meter and let the wood sit in your shop for at least four weeks before you cut. Every twisted home-built neck traces back to wood that was still moving.

3.2 Hardware

  • Tremolo bridge: vintage six-screw or modern two-post. Vintage plates commonly use 56.4 mm (2 7/32") string spacing; modern two-post typically 52.4 mm (2 1/16"). Measure yours.
  • 5 tremolo springs + spring claw + 2 claw screws
  • Tremolo arm and tip
  • 6 machine heads (vintage split-shaft need 8.7 mm / 11/32" holes; modern sealed usually 10 mm)
  • Neck plate + 4 neck bolts (#8 × 44 mm / 1 3/4")
  • 1 or 2 string trees + spacers
  • Strap buttons ×2 with screws
  • Output jack, cup-style ferrule plate, and 2 screws
  • Truss rod: vintage single-action 190 mm, or dual-action 400 mm+
  • Fret wire: ~2.5 m. Medium jumbo (approx. 2.3 mm wide × 1.2 mm tall crown) is the safe modern choice; vintage Strat wire is nearer 2.0 mm × 1.0 mm.
  • Nut blank: bone, Tusq or Micarta, ~44 × 6 × 10 mm

3.3 Electronics (standard SSS Strat)

  • 3 × single-coil pickups (neck / middle / RWRP middle / bridge)
  • 5-way blade switch
  • 1 × 250 kΩ audio-taper volume pot, 2 × 250 kΩ tone pots
  • 0.022 µF or 0.047 µF tone capacitor
  • Pickguard (11-hole modern or 8-hole vintage), back tremolo cover
  • 3 pickup covers, 2 tone knobs + 1 volume knob, switch tip
  • Pickup mounting screws + springs or surgical tubing
  • Shielding: copper foil tape or conductive paint for the cavities

3.4 Consumables

Glue, abrasives from 80 to 2,000 grit, masking tape, denatured alcohol, paste wax, pencil chalk (for fret levelling), a set of strings in your target gauge (.009–.042 or .010–.046).


Part 4 — The measurements that actually matter

Before you cut anything, understand these seven relationships. Everything else on a Stratocaster is cosmetic by comparison.

4.1 Scale length is a distance between two points, not a body dimension

The scale is the distance from the front face of the nut (the fingerboard side) to the string break point on the saddle: 647.7 mm (25.5"). Every fret sits at a calculated fraction of that distance. If your fret slots are cut for 647.7 mm and your bridge ends up at 650 mm, the guitar will be flat everywhere and no saddle screw will fix the middle of the neck.

4.2 Fret positions for a 647.7 mm (25.5") scale

Distance is always measured from the nut face to the centre of the fret slot.

The formula, if you want to generate it yourself for any scale S:

distance to fret n  =  S − ( S / 2^(n/12) )

Measure cumulatively from the nut every time. Never measure fret-to-fret and add up — the errors compound and by the 12th fret you will be a millimetre out, which is roughly 5 cents of pitch error.

4.3 Where the bridge goes

Two methods. Use the second one.

Theoretical: place the bridge so the high-E saddle break point sits at 647.7 mm from the nut face, plus about 1.0–1.5 mm of compensation, with the saddle at the middle of its adjustment travel.

Practical (do this): fret and finish the neck first, bolt it into the pocket, then:

  1. Measure from the nut face to the crown centre of the 12th fret. It should read 323.85 mm. If it reads 324.4 mm, your working scale is now 648.8 mm — use that number.
  2. Double the measured figure. That is your real uncompensated scale line.
  3. Set all six saddles to the centre of their travel.
  4. Position the bridge so the high-E saddle break point lands 1.0–1.5 mm behind the scale line, and the low-E saddle 2.5–3.2 mm behind it. Vintage Strat saddles are staggered for exactly this reason.
  5. Check string alignment before you drill: the outer strings should sit roughly 3.0–3.5 mm in from the fingerboard edge at the last fret. Clamp the bridge, run a string from the tuner post to the saddle, and eyeball it down the neck.

Only when both the scale line and the lateral alignment are right do you centre-punch and drill.

4.4 Neck pocket geometry

  • Width: 55.6 mm (2 3/16") at the wide end. The pocket sides taper inward as they go toward the back wall — about 21.3 mm (0.84") of taper per side over the pocket depth on original drawings. Simpler approach: make the pocket from a template that matches your neck heel, with a 0.1–0.15 mm interference fit, and shim nothing.
  • Length: 76.2 mm (3"), with the back wall cut on a 127 mm (5") radius.
  • Depth: this is the number that sets your action ceiling. The relationship you care about is:

      = neck heel thickness + fretboard thickness − pocket depth

With a vintage 15.9 mm (5/8") pocket, a 22 mm heel and a 6.5 mm board, the board top sits about 12.6 mm above the body. A vintage Strat tremolo with saddles mid-travel wants roughly 11–13 mm. Rout the pocket 1 mm shallow, dry-assemble with the bridge, measure, then take the last millimetre off in 0.25 mm passes. You cannot put wood back.

  • Angle: 0°. Both the pocket floor and the heel underside must be dead flat and parallel to the body top. Check with a straightedge and a digital angle gauge, not by eye.

4.5 Centreline discipline

Draw a centreline on the body blank before you cut the outline, and on the neck blank before you do anything at all. Refresh it after every planing operation. Every hole, cavity and template registration references that line. A body whose outline is 1 mm off-centre looks fine; a neck pocket 1 mm off-centre gives you a string that falls off the edge of the fingerboard.

4.6 Nut geometry

  • Slot width in the neck: typically 3.2 mm (1/8"), depth ~3.2 mm.
  • String spacing: measure the outer two strings 3.0–3.5 mm in from each fingerboard edge, then space the inner four by their gap, not their centres — this is why the low E and high E look uneven if you space centre-to-centre.
  • Slot depth: with a capo at the 3rd fret, the clearance between the string and the top of the 1st fret should be 0.05–0.10 mm — just visible daylight. That is the correct nut height for every string.
  • Slot angle: file each slot sloping down toward the headstock, following the string's path to its tuner post, so the string breaks cleanly at the front edge of the nut.

4.7 Fret slot depth

Slot depth = fret tang depth + 0.1–0.25 mm. For common medium-jumbo wire with a 1.3 mm tang, cut to about 1.5 mm. Cut the slots before you radius the board, then re-run the saw after radiusing — sanding the radius removes material at the edges and makes the slots shallower there, which is the classic cause of frets that will not seat at the ends.


Part 5 — Step-by-step build

Phase 0 — Plans and templates

  1. Obtain a full-size, dimensioned plan. Buy one; do not trace a photograph. Print it at 100% and verify by measuring a known dimension.
  2. Make templates from 6 mm MDF or acrylic: body outline, neck pocket, each pickup rout, control cavity, tremolo cavity, spring cavity, and the neck outline.
  3. Verify every template against the actual part. Offer up the pickup, the tremolo plate, the pot. Templates are where your errors get duplicated six times.
  4. Label the reference face and centreline on each template.

Phase 1 — Body blank

  1. Joint the mating edges of your two body halves. They must close with no gap under a straightedge and no clamping pressure needed to bring them together.
  2. Glue up with even clamp pressure, alternating clamps above and below. Squeeze-out along the whole joint means enough glue.
  3. Leave 24 hours, then scrape the glue line and flatten both faces — hand plane and winding sticks, or a thicknesser.
  4. Bring to 45.5 mm, not 44.45 mm. You want a millimetre in hand for post-routing levelling.
  5. Mark the centreline, then the outline from your template.

Phase 2 — Body outline

  1. Bandsaw 2–3 mm outside the line.
  2. Attach the outline template with double-sided tape or toggle clamps, registered on the centreline.
  3. Flush-trim the perimeter in 2–3 shallow passes, climb-cutting where the grain wants to tear (the horn tips and the lower cutaway).
  4. Do not round the edges yet. All cavity routing wants a square edge for reference.

Phase 3 — Neck pocket

  1. Fix the pocket template on the centreline, checking with a square from a fixed reference at the bridge end.
  2. Rout in 3–4 mm depth increments to about 1 mm shy of your target depth.
  3. Clean the corners with a chisel — a 12.7 mm bit leaves 6.35 mm radii the neck heel will not sit into.
  4. Test-fit the neck heel. Aim for a fit you can push home by hand and lift out without tools. Gaps at the sides let the neck move under string tension.
  5. Dry-assemble the neck and bridge, measure fingerboard height over the body top (§4.4), and take the final depth in 0.25 mm passes.

Phase 4 — Cavities

  1. Pickup routs: three cavities, typically 19 mm (3/4") deep. Check against your pickups: a taller-bobbin pickup wants more, and the bottom of the rout must clear the baseplate with the pickup at its lowest adjustment. Rout the neck and middle first — they are the most forgiving.
  2. Control cavity: 30–32 mm deep, sized so the pots and switch clear the underside of the pickguard.
  3. Tremolo cavity: the through-slot for the block, plus the rear spring cavity. The block must swing freely fore and aft with no contact — check with the trem installed and the arm pushed to both extremes.
  4. Channels: 3.2 mm (1/8") wiring channel from the bridge pickup rout to the control cavity, and from the control cavity to the jack. A long aircraft drill bit is the alternative.
  5. Jack rout: the cup-ferrule recess on the lower bout, plus a 22 mm angled bore into the control cavity.
  6. Break all cavity edges lightly so finish does not build a sharp ridge.

Phase 5 — Contours and edges

  1. Mark the forearm contour and belly cut. Remove the bulk with a rasp or a bandsaw, then refine with a spokeshave and scrapers. There is no single correct profile — work symmetrically and check by feel with the body against your ribs.
  2. Roundover the perimeter with a 6.35 mm (1/4") bit, then soften by hand where the roundover meets the contours.
  3. Sand the whole body 120 → 180 → 220. Raise the grain with a damp rag between the last two grits and sand back — this stops the finish lifting fibres later.

Phase 6 — Drilling the body

Do all of this on a drill press with the body clamped and the table checked square.

  1. Neck bolt holes: transfer from the neck plate, not from a number. 4.2–4.5 mm through the body, countersunk for the plate.
  2. Tremolo screws or posts: centre-punch through the clamped bridge. Six-screw plates take 4 mm pilots for #6 screws; two-post inserts want a precisely sized bore — follow the insert spec exactly and drill perpendicular.
  3. Spring claw: two 3 mm pilots in the rear cavity.
  4. Strap buttons, pickguard screws, jack plate: all 2 mm pilots. Transfer pickguard holes from the actual pickguard with the neck bolted on.

Every screw into hardwood gets a pilot hole. Alder splits, maple splits, and a split horn is a rebuild.

Phase 7 — Neck blank and truss rod

  1. Plane the neck blank flat and square, dead quartersawn face to the sides. Mark the centreline on both faces.
  2. Cut the neck outline oversize on the bandsaw, or template-rout it — leave the heel and the headstock outline until after fretting if you can, so you have square surfaces to clamp.
  3. Truss rod channel: measure your rod with the caliper. A dual-action rod typically wants 6.4–6.5 mm wide × 10–11 mm deep, cut on the centreline with a straight bit and a fence, in 2 mm passes.
    • Vintage route: channel cut from the back with a curved profile, rod dropped in, walnut skunk stripe glued over it, then planed flush.
    • Modern route (easier): straight channel cut from the front, rod installed, then the fingerboard glued over the top. Adjustment at the heel or through the headstock.
  4. Check the rod turns freely in the channel before you glue anything over it.

Phase 8 — Fingerboard

  1. Thickness the board to about 8 mm.
  2. Slot the frets while the board is flat. Use a mitre box with a slotting template for 25.5", or a CNC-slotted board. Depth stop set per §4.7. Cut every slot from the same reference end.
  3. Taper the board: mark the nut width (41.3 or 42.8 mm) and the width at the last fret (typically 55.5–57 mm for a Strat), join with a straightedge, and plane or route to the line.
  4. Inlays: drill and rout dot positions between the correct frets (3, 5, 7, 9, 12 double, 15, 17, 19, 21) on the fingerboard centreline. Glue dots slightly proud, then level.
  5. Radius the board with a radius block, 80 → 120 → 180 grit, working the full length with long even strokes. Check with radius gauges at the nut, 5th, 12th and last fret — the radius must be consistent along the whole board.
  6. Re-run the fret saw to restore full slot depth at the edges.
  7. Glue to the neck. Locate with two small brad pins in fret slot positions to stop the board sliding. Clamp with a cambered caul matching your radius so pressure is even across the width. Titebond, moderate glue, plenty of clamps, 12 hours.

Phase 9 — Headstock and neck carve

  1. Cut the headstock outline. Fender headstocks are flat and in-plane with the fingerboard — no back-angle. You achieve the string break by stepping the headstock down to about 14.3 mm (0.563") thickness and using string trees. This is exactly why a Strat has string trees and a Gibson does not.
  2. Drill the tuner holes on the drill press: 8.7 mm (11/32") for vintage split-shaft, 10 mm for most modern sealed tuners. Check the spec of your actual tuners.
  3. Carve the neck. Mark depth stops: drill or mark to 21 mm at the 1st fret and 22.5 mm at the 12th (adjust to your preference). Remove wood with a spokeshave working from the centre outward, facet the shoulders, then blend. Check constantly with a profile gauge or by hand — your palm is a better judge than your eye.
  4. Shape the heel transition and the volute area (Fender has no volute; blend smoothly into the headstock step).
  5. Sand 120 → 180 → 220 → 320. Grain-raise and sand back.

Phase 10 — Fretting

  1. Check the fingerboard is straight with the truss rod neutral. A slight back-bow is fine; a forward bow will get worse once frets go in.
  2. Bend the fret wire to a radius tighter than the board — roughly 2" smaller. This makes the fret ends pull down rather than lift.
  3. Cut each fret 3 mm over-length. Nip the tang flush at both ends if you have a bound board; otherwise leave it.
  4. Seat each fret. Press with a caul matching the radius, or hammer from the centre outward with a brass hammer — three or four firm taps, not a dozen light ones. The fret must sit with no gap under the crown anywhere.
  5. Add a drop of thin CA at each fret end and wick it in. Wipe immediately.
  6. Nip the ends flush, then file the bevel at 35° with a fret-end file and a fingerboard guard in place.
  7. Dress the ends: round the corner of every fret end so it cannot catch a fingertip. This is 30 minutes of tedium that separates a homemade guitar from a good one.

Phase 11 — Fretwork

  1. Set the neck dead straight with the truss rod, checked with a notched straightedge.
  2. Mark every crown with a marker pen.
  3. Level with the 400 mm beam, 400 grit, working in long diagonal strokes both directions. Stop the moment every crown shows a witness mark. Check with the fret rocker across every set of three frets — any rock means a high fret remains.
  4. Recrown each fret with the crowning file until the flat spot narrows to a thin line down the centre.
  5. Polish: 400 → 800 → 1,500 → 2,500 grit, then micro-mesh to 12,000, with a fingerboard guard. Frets should look like chrome.
  6. Oil a rosewood or pau ferro board with lemon oil; leave maple bare, it gets finished.

Phase 12 — The nut

  1. Fit the blank to the slot so it drops in with light friction. The bottom must be flat (or curved, on a vintage-style curved slot) with full contact.
  2. Mark the fingerboard radius on the blank plus about 1 mm, and shape the top.
  3. Mark string positions per §4.6, spacing by string gaps.
  4. Cut each slot in stages. Start shallow, fit the string, capo at the 3rd fret, and file until the clearance over the 1st fret is 0.05–0.10 mm. Then stop. A slot cut too deep means a new nut.
  5. Slots slope down toward the headstock. Slot width ≈ string gauge + 0.05 mm — the string should sit in the slot, not be pinched by it.
  6. Final-shape the nut ends flush with the fingerboard, polish, and set it aside for after finishing.

Phase 13 — Finishing

  1. Mask the neck pocket, cavities, fret slots and fingerboard (if rosewood).
  2. Grain-fill ash. Alder needs no filler.
  3. Sanding sealer, 2 light coats, sanded back to 320.
  4. Colour coats: build slowly, many thin passes. Sunbursts go light → mid → dark, sprayed from the edge inward at a shallow angle.
  5. Clear coats: 6–10 thin coats with the manufacturer's recommended flash time between them.
  6. Cure. Nitrocellulose needs 3–4 weeks minimum before levelling. Rushing this is the most common finishing failure — the finish shrinks after you polish and your gloss goes flat.
  7. Level-sand wet, 800 → 1,200 → 2,000 grit, with a hard block and plenty of soapy water. Watch the edges.
  8. Compound and polish to gloss. Finish the neck to satin with 0000 wool or a fine pad if you want a fast feel.

Phase 14 — Assembly

  1. Clear finish from the fret slots and neck pocket with a scraper.
  2. Press tuner bushings in, install tuners, align the string posts.
  3. Install the neck: bolt it in progressively, tightening in a cross pattern to seat the heel evenly. Snug, not gorilla-tight.
  4. Install the tremolo and springs. Start with three springs for .009s, four or five for .010s and up.
  5. Install the jack, strap buttons, string trees.
  6. Fit the nut. Glue is optional — one small spot of wood glue is plenty, or none at all if the fit is right.

Phase 15 — Wiring

Standard SSS Stratocaster circuit:

  1. Shield the cavities with copper tape, overlapping seams, and solder the seams together.
  2. Mount pickups to the pickguard with screws and springs (or tubing). Set them low for now.
  3. Mount volume and two tone pots and the 5-way switch to the pickguard.
  4. Connections:
    • All three pickup hot leads → the input lugs of the 5-way switch (neck, middle, bridge to their respective poles).
    • Switch common output → volume pot input lug (lug 3).
    • Volume pot output (lug 2) → output jack tip.
    • Volume pot lug 1 → ground.
    • Tone 1 wiper → 0.022 µF cap → ground, fed from the neck pickup pole; Tone 2 the same, fed from middle (vintage) or bridge (modern, more useful).
    • All pickup grounds, pot casings, tremolo claw ground wire and jack sleeve → a single common ground point. One star ground, not a daisy chain of guesses.
  5. Before you bolt the pickguard down: check continuity with the multimeter, confirm each pot reads ~250 kΩ end to end, and tap-test each pickup through an amp.
  6. Dress the wires so nothing is pinched when the pickguard seats.

Phase 16 — Setup

Fender's published factory specifications — use these as your targets. All measurements with fresh strings, tuned to pitch, and rechecked between every step because each adjustment affects the others.

1. Neck relief. Capo the 1st fret, hold the low E down at the last fret, and measure between the top of the 8th fret and the bottom of the string with a feeler gauge:

Adjust the truss rod in quarter turns, retune, remeasure. Never force a rod.

Set each saddle to follow the fingerboard radius — a 9.5" board needs the middle strings slightly higher than the outer ones.

3. Pickup height, measured from the pole piece to the bottom of the string with the last fret held down:

The neck pickup sees a wider string swing than the bridge — set it lower than the numbers suggest if you hear warbling or dead sustain from magnetic pull.

4. Tremolo balance. For a floating trem, adjust the claw screws until the plate sits parallel to the body with the guitar tuned to pitch, with roughly 1.5 mm of gap at the back edge. For a decked trem, tighten the claw until the plate sits flat and stays there.

5. Intonation. Compare the fretted 12th-fret note against the 12th-fret harmonic on each string:

  • Fretted note sharp → move the saddle back, away from the neck (lengthen).
  • Fretted note flat → move the saddle forward, toward the neck (shorten).

Work from the low E to the high E, retune after every change, and go around twice. Fret with normal pressure, not a death grip.

6. Nut slots. Recheck the 1st-fret clearance now that everything is under tension. Play open chords in the first position; if they sound sharp, the nut slots are still too high.

Part 7 — The ten mistakes that ruin scratch builds

  1. Routing the neck pocket to final depth before you have the neck and bridge in hand. Depth is a system dimension, not a catalogue number.
  2. Measuring fret positions cumulatively wrong — fret-to-fret instead of nut-to-fret.
  3. Forgetting to re-cut fret slots after radiusing. Frets lift at the ends, forever.
  4. Bending fret wire to the same radius as the board. It must be tighter.
  5. Drilling the bridge before checking string alignment. Six holes in the wrong place is a new body.
  6. Cutting nut slots too deep. Go slow, test with a capo at the 3rd fret after every few strokes.
  7. Polishing nitro before it has cured. Three weeks minimum. Four is better.
  8. Using flatsawn neck timber, or wood above 8% moisture content.
  9. Screws without pilot holes. Alder and maple both split.
  10. Skipping the multimeter check and discovering a cold joint after the pickguard, strings and setup are done.

Part 8 — Frequently asked questions

How deep should a Stratocaster neck pocket be? Vintage spec is 15.9 mm (5/8"). Current Fender production commonly runs 17.3–17.5 mm (0.680–0.690"). The correct depth for your build is whatever puts the fingerboard top at a height where your bridge saddles land in the middle of their adjustment range — typically 11–13 mm above the body top for a vintage tremolo. Always rout 1 mm shallow, dry-assemble, measure, then finish the cut.

What is the exact scale length of a Stratocaster? 647.7 mm (25.5"). European suppliers frequently list it as 648 mm, which is a rounding, not a different scale. The 12th fret sits at exactly half: 323.85 mm from the nut face.

Where do I position a Strat tremolo? Set all saddles to mid-travel, then place the bridge so the high-E saddle break point is 1.0–1.5 mm behind the scale line and the low-E is 2.5–3.2 mm behind it. Derive the scale line by measuring your actual nut-to-12th-fret distance and doubling it, rather than assuming 647.7 mm.

What fret slot depth should I cut? Tang depth plus 0.1–0.25 mm. For typical medium-jumbo wire with a 1.3 mm tang, cut about 1.5 mm. Slot width should be 0.58 mm (0.023") to match a standard fret saw kerf and the barbed tang.

Can I build a Stratocaster without a router? The body cavities, neck pocket and truss rod channel can all be done with chisels, a drill and a router plane — it is how they were done before routers were common. Budget three times the hours and expect a steeper learning curve. A router is the single highest-value tool purchase for this project.

How thick should the body be? 44.45 mm (1.75"), measured at the edge before the forearm and belly contours are cut. Start from a 45.5 mm blank so you have material for final levelling.

Which fingerboard radius should I choose? 9.5" (241 mm) is the best default: it takes a low action without fretting-out on bends, and it matches Fender's current spec tables. 7.25" (184 mm) is authentically vintage but needs a higher action. 12" (305 mm) or a 9.5"–14" compound suits players who bend a lot.

Do I need a neck angle or a shim? A correctly built Stratocaster needs neither. The pocket floor and the neck heel are both flat and parallel to the body top — 0°. If you find yourself needing a shim, your pocket depth is wrong, and a shim is a legitimate remedy for that mistake.

What is the hardest part of a scratch build? Fretwork. Levelling, crowning and polishing frets, then cutting the nut, is where playability is decided. Everything else is woodworking you can learn from books; fretwork is a feel you build up over a few necks.

Should I build a Telecaster instead for my first guitar? Very reasonable. A Telecaster has no tremolo cavity, a simpler control layout and fewer critical routs, which removes three of the trickiest operations. Many builders do a Tele first and a Strat second.
