A setup is not maintenance you do when something goes wrong. It is the process that turns a correctly assembled collection of parts into an instrument — and it is the single biggest difference between a guitar that feels expensive and one that feels cheap, regardless of what the parts cost.

Most people who conclude their guitar "just doesn't play well" have never had it set up properly. The good news is that a full setup takes about ninety minutes, needs maybe €40 of measuring tools, and is entirely learnable.

This guide covers the whole procedure for any Fender-style bolt-on guitar — S-Style, T-Style, or anything built on the same architecture. The target figures come from Fender's own published factory specification charts, not from folklore, and they are given for every common fingerboard radius because the correct action for a 7.25" board is genuinely different from the correct action for a 12" one.

The one thing to understand before you start: every adjustment affects every other adjustment. Lowering the action changes the string tension, which changes the neck relief, which changes the action again. This is why the order of operations matters and why you retune and remeasure constantly. Work through it in sequence, then go round a second time.


Part 1 — Before you touch anything

1.1 What you need

1.2 Always start with fresh strings

A setup measures how the guitar behaves under string tension. Old strings have lost tension, gone false (they no longer produce a clean harmonic series), and often have flat spots where they meet the frets. Setting up on old strings gives you a setup that is correct for strings you are about to throw away.

Fit the gauge you intend to keep using. Changing from .009s to .010s adds meaningful tension across the neck and will change your relief. If you switch gauges later, redo the setup.

1.3 Let the guitar acclimatise

If the guitar has just arrived — particularly if it has travelled in winter — let it sit in your room, in its case, for 24 hours before you set it up. Wood moves with temperature and humidity, and a neck measured cold will not stay where you put it.

This matters less with roasted maple necks, where torrefaction has driven out much of the moisture and the timber is markedly more stable. It still matters some.

1.4 Know your fingerboard radius

Everything downstream depends on this number. A 7.25" (184 mm) vintage board, a 9.5" (241 mm) modern-standard board and a 12" (305 mm) flat board have different correct relief and different correct action. If you do not know yours, check it with radius gauges at the 12th fret.

1.5 The order of operations

Do it in this sequence. Every step depends on the ones before it.

  1. Truss rod / neck relief
  2. String height (action)
  3. Saddle radius match
  4. Pickup height
  5. Intonation
  6. Nut slot check
  7. Go round again

The reason relief comes first is that neck curvature changes the string height everywhere. Set action first and you will just have to set it again.


Part 2 — Step 1: Neck relief

2.1 What relief is and why you want some

A plucked string vibrates in an arc — narrow at the ends, widest in the middle. A dead-straight neck brings the middle frets too close to the widest part of that arc, and the string slaps against them.

Relief is a tiny concave bow in the neck that gives the string room to move where it moves most, without raising the action at the nut or the bridge. It is measured in hundredths of a millimetre and it makes an enormous difference.

  • Too little relief (neck too straight) → buzzing in the middle of the neck, roughly frets 5–12.
  • Too much relief (neck too bowed) → high, stiff action in the middle of the neck; the guitar feels like hard work around the 7th fret; notes go sharp when fretted there.

2.2 How to measure it

  1. Tune to pitch.
  2. Capo the 1st fret.
  3. Hold the low E string down at the last fret (or use a second capo — but your fretting hand is fine).
  4. The string is now a straight line between those two points. Slide a feeler gauge into the gap between the top of the 8th fret and the bottom of the string.

That gap is your relief.

Flatter boards want less relief, because a flatter board is generally set up with lower action and less string movement is tolerated.

These are starting points, not laws. A heavy strummer wants slightly more relief; a light-touch player with low action wants slightly less.

2.4 Adjusting the truss rod

The truss rod is a steel rod inside the neck that counteracts string tension. Turning it bends the neck.

Which way?

  • Too much relief (neck bowed forward, gap too big) → tighten the rod → turn clockwise.
  • Too little relief (neck too straight or back-bowed, gap too small) → loosen the rod → turn anticlockwise.

The memory aid: righty-tighty straightens.

How to do it safely:

  1. Detune slightly before adjusting — a quarter step or so takes tension off the rod.
  2. Seat the wrench fully. A partially seated wrench rounds the nut, and a rounded truss rod nut is a serious repair.
  3. Turn a quarter turn at a time. No more.
  4. Retune to pitch and remeasure. Repeat.
  5. If the rod feels stiff, stop. Do not force it. A truss rod at the end of its travel means something else is wrong.

Music Buddies necks use a double-acting truss rod adjustable at the headstock, which means it can bend the neck in both directions and you do not have to remove the neck to reach it. Vintage-style single-action rods can only correct a forward bow, and vintage Fender rods adjust at the heel — requiring the neck to come off for every adjustment.

Give it time. Wood does not move instantly. After a significant adjustment, tune to pitch and leave the guitar for a few hours — ideally overnight — before you judge the result. Chasing a target with rapid repeated turns is how people over-adjust.


Part 3 — Step 2: String height (action)

3.1 What you are trading off

Lower action is faster and easier to fret. Higher action buzzes less, sustains slightly better, and gives more room for hard picking. There is no universally correct answer — there is a correct answer for how you play.

Fender's factory figures are a good, conservative, playable starting point.

3.2 How to measure it

Measure at the 17th fret, from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string, with the guitar tuned to pitch and in playing position.

This is what the machinist's rule is for. A rule with dead length at the end cannot sit on a fret, and you will measure something meaningless.

Why a 7.25" board needs higher action: on a tightly curved fingerboard, a string bent across the board rises relative to the frets under it, and "frets out" — chokes — if the action is too low. This is the single most common complaint about vintage-radius necks, and it is a geometry problem, not a fault.

3.4 Making the adjustment

On an S-Style tremolo or a modern 6-saddle Tele bridge: each saddle has two height screws. Raise or lower both by the same amount to keep the saddle level, then check the string sits centred over its pole piece.

On a vintage 3-saddle Tele bridge: each barrel carries two strings and has two height screws. You are setting a compromise height per pair, and tilting the barrel slightly is normal and correct.

Work from the outer strings inward, and retune constantly — changing one string's height changes the tension balance across the whole neck.


Part 4 — Step 3: Match the saddles to the fingerboard radius

This step is skipped more often than any other, and it is the reason a lot of guitars feel almost right.

Your fingerboard is curved. If your saddles are set in a straight line, the middle strings will be too low relative to the outer ones — they will buzz — or too high, and they will feel stiff and be easy to over-bend.

The saddle heights must trace the same arc as the fingerboard.

4.1 How to do it

  1. Use a radius gauge matching your board (9.5" for most modern necks, 7.25" vintage, 12" flat).
  2. Hold it just in front of the saddles, under the strings.
  3. Adjust each saddle until all six strings touch the gauge evenly.

On a 9.5" board the D and G strings sit noticeably higher than the E strings — around 0.5 mm higher. That is correct. It looks wrong to the eye and feels right under the hand.

Compound radius necks (flatter toward the body) should be radiused at the saddles to the radius at the upper end of the fingerboard, not the nut end.

On a 3-saddle Tele bridge you can only approximate this with three barrels. Set the outer barrels first and split the difference on the middle one.


Part 5 — Step 4: Pickup height

5.1 Why this matters more than people think

Pickup height is not just a volume control. Pickups contain magnets, and a magnet close to a steel string pulls on it. Set a pickup too high and the magnetic pull physically damps the string's vibration.

The symptoms are distinctive and widely misdiagnosed:

  • Warbling or wobbling notes, especially on the low E and A above the 12th fret
  • Poor sustain that sounds like a dead string but isn't
  • Intonation that will not settle, particularly on the neck pickup
  • A strange out-of-tune quality often called "Stratitis"

Every one of these is cured by lowering the pickup a millimetre.

5.2 How to measure it

From the top of the pole piece to the bottom of the string, with the last fret held down. Holding the last fret puts the string at its closest approach to the pickup — that is the measurement that matters.

Note the pattern: hotter, more powerful pickups sit further from the strings. A Texas Special has a strong magnet, so it needs distance; a standard modern single coil is milder and can sit closer.

The bass side always sits lower than the treble side, because thicker strings swing wider and have more magnetic mass.

5.4 Adjusting by ear afterwards

Once you are at the factory figures, balance by ear:

  1. Play the same phrase switching between pickups. The perceived volume should be even.
  2. A neck pickup usually needs to sit lower than the numbers suggest, because the string swing is widest over the neck position. On a Telecaster the neck pickup under its chrome cover is especially easy to set too high.
  3. If a pickup sounds thin, raise it. If it sounds compressed, woolly, or the notes warble, lower it.
  4. Individual pole pieces, if adjustable, let you balance string-to-string.

Part 6 — Step 5: Intonation

6.1 What intonation actually is

Pressing a string against a fret stretches it slightly, which raises its pitch. The thicker the string and the higher the action, the more it stretches. Intonation compensates by moving each saddle so that the string's effective vibrating length produces the right pitch when fretted.

This is why saddles sit in a staggered line rather than a straight one, and why the low E saddle is always further back than the high E.

6.2 How to do it

  1. Tune to pitch. Accurately, with a good tuner.
  2. Play the 12th fret harmonic — touch the string lightly directly over the 12th fret and pluck. Note the pitch.
  3. Play the fretted note at the 12th fret with normal pressure. Note the pitch.
  4. Compare:

  1. Retune after every saddle adjustment — moving a saddle changes the string's tension.
  2. Work from low E to high E, then go round a second time. The first pass is always approximate.

6.3 The technique errors that ruin intonation

  • Fretting too hard. Squeezing the string sharp gives you a false reading and you will compensate for a problem that only exists when you press too hard. Use normal playing pressure.
  • Not retuning between adjustments. The single most common mistake.
  • Using a cheap tuner. You are chasing a few cents; the tuner needs to resolve that.
  • Setting intonation before action. Action height changes how far the string stretches when fretted, so it changes intonation. Always do action first.

6.4 On a 3-saddle Telecaster bridge

Three barrels serve six strings, and each pair needs a different length. Perfect intonation is geometrically impossible.

What you can do:

  1. Angle each barrel so the error is shared between the two strings it carries.
  2. Prioritise whichever string of the pair you use most in open-position chords — usually the G over the D.
  3. Fit compensated brass barrels, which are angled from the factory and get you most of the way there while keeping the vintage look and tone.
  4. Or fit a 6-saddle plate and solve it outright.

Part 7 — Step 6: The nut

The nut is the most overlooked component on a guitar and the cause of a startling share of "my guitar won't stay in tune" problems.

7.1 Checking slot height

  1. Capo at the 3rd fret.
  2. Look at the gap between each string and the top of the 1st fret.
  3. You want 0.05–0.10 mm — just visible daylight. If you can see obvious space, the slot is too high.

Slots too high is by far the more common fault, and its signature symptom is distinctive: open chords in the first position sound sharp, and the first two frets feel stiff. If your guitar plays in tune everywhere except the first few frets, this is almost always why.

Slots too low causes the open string to buzz against the 1st fret. The fix is a shim under the nut or a new nut.

7.2 Slot width and binding

The slot should be the string gauge plus about 0.05 mm — the string sits in the slot, it is not pinched by it.

A slot that is too narrow, or has a rough or sharp back edge, grabs the string. You tune up, the string binds at the nut, and then it releases with an audible ping mid-song and drops out of tune. If you hear a ping while tuning, that is the nut, not the tuner.

Symptoms of a binding nut:

  • A ping or click when tuning
  • Goes out of tune after any bend or tremolo use
  • Goes sharp after you bend, and stays sharp

Quick fixes:

  • Lubricate the slots. Pencil graphite is the classic remedy and works well. Rub a soft pencil into each slot.
  • Make sure the slot's back edge is smooth and slopes down toward the headstock.

7.3 When to hand it over

Deepening nut slots requires nut files in the correct gauges, and it is a one-way operation — a slot cut too deep means a new nut. If your slots are too high and you do not have the files, this is a legitimate job for a tech. It is usually inexpensive and it transforms how the first position feels.


Part 8 — Tremolo setup (S-Style)

If your guitar has a tremolo, it needs balancing, and it interacts with everything else you have just set.

8.2 Balancing a floating tremolo

  1. Tune to pitch.
  2. Look at the bridge plate from the side. If the back edge is lifting too high, tighten the claw screws. If the plate is pulled down flat, loosen them.
  3. Adjust in half turns, retuning between each — the string tension and spring tension are in a tug of war, so every change moves the pitch.
  4. Repeat until the plate sits parallel with the guitar at pitch.

Spring count matters. Three springs suit .009–.042; four or five suit .010–.046 and heavier. Too few springs and the claw has to be cranked in hard, which makes the trem stiff and the balance twitchy.

8.3 Decking a tremolo

Tighten the claw screws until the plate sits flat on the body and stays there under tension. Then tune. Some players add a fifth spring for certainty. You lose pull-up bends and gain a guitar that stays in tune.


Part 9 — Diagnosing common problems

Part 10 — Keeping it set up

10.1 How often

  • Check relief and action: twice a year, at the seasonal changeovers. Wood moves with humidity, and this is the main reason a guitar that played beautifully in June feels different in January.
  • Full setup: annually, or whenever you change string gauge.
  • Intonation: whenever you change gauge or notice fretted notes drifting.
  • Nut lubrication: at every string change. It takes ten seconds.

10.2 Humidity

Aim for 40–55% relative humidity. Below 35% fingerboards shrink and fret ends become sharp; above 60% necks take on relief and action rises. A €15 hygrometer in the room where you keep your guitars is a sensible purchase.

Roasted maple necks are more stable than untreated maple, but no wood is immune.

10.3 Nitrocellulose finishes

If your body has a nitro finish, two things are worth knowing:

  • Nitro reacts with certain plastics and rubbers. Some guitar stands, strap ends and cable jackets will leave a permanent imprint or soften the finish where they touch. Use a cloth barrier or stands designed for nitro.
  • Nitro checks and ages. Fine cracking in the finish over time is expected behaviour, not damage, and it is exactly why people buy nitro.

10.4 Changing string gauge

Any gauge change means a new setup. Heavier strings add tension, pull more relief into the neck, and change how far the string stretches when fretted — so relief, action and intonation all shift. Budget an hour after any gauge change.


Part 11 — Frequently asked questions

How much relief should my neck have? Fender's published figures are 0.30 mm (.012") for a 7.25" radius board, 0.25 mm (.010") for 9.5"–12", and 0.20 mm (.008") for 15"–17". Measure at the 8th fret with a capo at the 1st and the low E held down at the last fret. Heavy strummers can go slightly above these; light-touch players with low action slightly below.

Which way do I turn the truss rod? Clockwise tightens the rod and straightens the neck, reducing relief. Anticlockwise loosens it and allows more relief. Turn a quarter turn at a time, detune slightly first, retune and remeasure after each adjustment, and never force a stiff rod.

Why does my guitar go sharp when I fret? Two likely causes. If it happens across the whole neck, your action is too high — the string stretches further to reach the fret. If it happens only in the first two or three frets, your nut slots are too high, which is a very common fault and the classic reason open chords sound sharp on an otherwise well-intonated guitar.

How high should my pickups be? Measured from the pole piece to the string with the last fret held down: vintage-style singles at 2.4 mm bass / 2.0 mm treble; American and Mexican Standard at 2.0 mm / 1.6 mm; Texas Specials at 3.2 mm / 2.4 mm; humbuckers at 1.6 mm both sides. Hotter pickups sit further away. If notes warble or sustain dies on the low strings, the pickup is too close and its magnet is damping the string.

Why does my guitar buzz on the middle frets? Almost always insufficient neck relief. The string vibrates in an arc that is widest around the middle of its length, and a neck that is too straight puts the middle frets into that arc. Loosen the truss rod a quarter turn, retune, and remeasure at the 8th fret.

My guitar won't stay in tune after bending. Why? Usually the nut, not the tuners. If you hear a ping while tuning, the string is binding in its slot and releasing suddenly. Lubricate the slots with pencil graphite, check the slot's back edge is smooth and slopes toward the headstock, and confirm the slot is the string gauge plus about 0.05 mm — the string should sit in it, not be pinched by it.

Can I set up a guitar with a 7.25" vintage radius as low as a modern one? Not usually. On a tightly curved board, a bent string rises relative to the frets beneath it and chokes out. That is why Fender specifies higher action for a 7.25" board — 2.0 mm on the bass side against 1.6 mm for a 9.5" board. It is geometry, not a fault.

Do I need to set the saddle heights to my fingerboard radius? Yes, and it is the step people skip most. If the saddles sit in a straight line while the fingerboard is curved, the middle strings end up relatively too low or too high. On a 9.5" board the D and G saddles should sit around half a millimetre higher than the outer ones. Use a radius gauge held under the strings just in front of the saddles.

How often does a guitar need setting up? Check relief and action twice a year at the seasonal humidity changes; do a full setup annually or whenever you change string gauge. Lubricate the nut slots at every string change — it takes ten seconds and prevents most tuning complaints.

Can I damage my guitar doing this? The realistic risks are small and avoidable: forcing a truss rod, using a poorly seated wrench and rounding the truss rod nut, or cutting a nut slot too deep. Quarter turns, the correct wrench fully seated, and stopping when something feels stiff will keep you safe. Everything else in a setup is reversible.

In what order should I do everything? Relief, then action, then saddle radius, then pickup height, then intonation, then the nut check — and then go round a second time. Every adjustment affects the others, so a single pass is never quite right.
