How to Build a Telecaster From Scratch: The Complete Guide

The Telecaster was the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitar, and it still shows: a slab body, a bolted neck, a bridge plate that doubles as a pickup mount, and an electrical assembly that drops in through a hole in the top. There is almost nothing on a Tele that exists for decoration.
For a scratch builder, that austerity is a gift. Compared with a Stratocaster you lose the tremolo cavity, the through-body block slot, the rear spring rout and the three-pickup layout — four of the operations most likely to go wrong. What you gain is a new one: six string-through ferrule holes that have to be drilled dead perpendicular and dead in line, plus a bridge pickup rout that is deeper than most beginners expect.
This is a full scratch build from rough boards. Metric first, original Fender imperial spec in brackets.
On tolerances. Fender's dimensions have drifted across eras and factories, and third-party parts vary more than that. Every hardware figure here is a starting reference — put a caliper on the actual part before you commit a cut. The catalogue is negotiable; the wood is not.

Part 2 — Tools required
Items marked [critical] determine whether the guitar plays. The rest determine how long it takes you.
2.1 Measuring, marking and layout

2.4 Gluing and clamping
Titebond Original or hide glue; thin CA; 6 × F-clamps; 4 × bar clamps; a cambered fingerboard caul matching your radius; waxed paper; glue brush.
2.5 Finishing
Grain filler (essential for ash — a Tele's classic timber), sanding sealer, nitrocellulose / 2K poly / water-based acrylic, spray gun or aerosols, organic-vapour respirator [critical], nitrile gloves, eye protection, 400–2,000 grit wet-and-dry, polishing compound.
2.6 Electronics and assembly
Temperature-controlled soldering iron, 30–60 W, chisel tip [critical]; 60/40 rosin-core solder; multimeter [critical]; wire strippers, side cutters, needle-nose pliers; heat-shrink; 22 AWG hookup wire (cloth-covered for vintage looks); PH1/PH2 screwdrivers and small flatheads; 10 mm and 7 mm nut drivers; truss rod wrench; string winder; strobe or good clip-on tuner [critical].
2.7 Safety
Dust extraction, hearing protection, two hands on the router, workpiece always clamped. Ash dust is coarse and abundant; rosewood and ebony dust are sensitisers.
Part 3 — Materials and parts
3.1 Timber

Moisture content 6–8%. Acclimatise the timber in your shop for at least four weeks. A €25 pin meter will save you a neck.
3.2 Hardware
- Bridge: vintage 3-saddle "ashtray" plate, or a modern 6-saddle plate. Vintage plates have 3 mounting screws; modern usually 4. Transfer the holes from the plate itself.
- 6 string ferrules (for a string-through body) — or a top-loader plate if you prefer, which skips the ferrule drilling entirely
- 6 machine heads (vintage split-shaft: 8.7 mm / 11/32" holes; modern sealed: usually 10 mm)
- Neck plate + 4 neck bolts (#8 × 44 mm / 1 3/4")
- 1 string tree + spacer
- 2 strap buttons with screws
- Output jack + Tele jack cup and mounting clip (this is a Tele-specific part — the cup presses into a bore in the side of the body)
- Truss rod: vintage single-action 190 mm, or dual-action 400 mm+
- Fret wire: ~2.5 m. Vintage Tele wire is around 2.0 mm × 1.0 mm; medium jumbo (~2.3 × 1.2 mm) is the modern default
- Nut blank: bone, Tusq or Micarta, ~44 × 6 × 10 mm
3.3 Electronics (standard modern Tele)
- Bridge pickup (mounts to the bridge plate) + neck pickup (mounts in the body rout, under a chrome cover)
- 3-way blade switch
- 1 × 250 kΩ audio volume pot, 1 × 250 kΩ tone pot
- 0.047 µF tone capacitor (classic Tele value)

3.4 Consumables
Glue, abrasives 80–2,000, masking tape, denatured alcohol, paste wax, marker pen for fret levelling, a set of strings in your target gauge (.010–.046 suits a Tele well).
Part 4 — The measurements that actually matter
4.1 Scale length is a distance between two points
647.7 mm (25.5") from the front face of the nut to the string break point on the saddle. Fret positions are fractions of that distance. Get the fret slots and the bridge referencing different scale lengths and the guitar will never intonate.

distance to fret n = S − ( S / 2^(n/12) )
Always measure cumulatively from the nut. Fret-to-fret measurement compounds error, and one millimetre of error at the 12th fret is roughly five cents of pitch.
4.3 Where the bridge plate goes
The Telecaster's vintage 3-saddle bridge is a compromise by design: two strings share each saddle, so perfect intonation on all six is impossible. Placement therefore matters more than on a Strat, because you have less adjustment to fix a mistake.
Procedure:
- Fret and finish the neck, then bolt it into the pocket.
- Measure from the nut face to the crown centre of the 12th fret. It should read 323.85 mm. Whatever it actually reads, double it — that is your real scale line.
- Set the saddles to the centre of their travel. On a vintage 3-saddle bridge, also set the saddles slightly angled (treble end forward) as they will end up.
- Position the plate so the high-E break point sits about 1.0–1.5 mm behind the scale line, and the low-E break point about 2.5–3.2 mm behind it.
- Check lateral alignment before drilling. The outer strings should sit 3.0–3.5 mm inside the fingerboard edge at the last fret. Run two strings from the tuner posts over the saddles and sight down the neck. The Tele bridge plate's pickup aperture and its raised side walls give you very little room to correct this afterwards.
- Clamp, then centre-punch and drill only when both the scale line and the alignment are right.
Modern 6-saddle plates give you individual adjustment and are far more forgiving on a first build. There is no shame in it.
4.4 String-through ferrule holes — the Tele-specific operation
This is the step that most often ruins a first Telecaster body.
- Each string needs a 7.94 mm (5/16") through-bore from the back of the body into the corresponding hole in the bridge plate.
- Each bore is counterbored to 9.53 mm (3/8") on the back face to accept the ferrule flange, deep enough that the ferrule sits flush or a hair below the surface.
- The spacing must match your bridge plate exactly. Do not use a published number — transfer directly from the plate.
Method:
- With the bridge plate located and clamped (from §4.3), mark through each string hole in the plate onto the body top with a transfer punch or a sharp awl.
- Move to the drill press. Check the table is square to the spindle in both axes.
- Drill the 7.94 mm holes from the top, through the body, with a backer board underneath to prevent blow-out.
- Flip the body, register on the exit holes, and counterbore 9.53 mm from the back to ferrule depth.
- Press the ferrules in. A drop of thin CA on the flange edge stops them creeping out.
If the drill press wanders, the string will exit the ferrule at an angle and bind — audible as a string that will not stay in tune and a hole that eats string ends. Perpendicular is everything.
Alternative: a top-loader bridge plate skips this step completely. Early-1959 Fenders were top-loaders, so it is period-legitimate as well as easier.
4.5 Neck pocket geometry
- Width: 55.6 mm (2 3/16") at the wide end, tapering toward the back wall.
- Length: 76.2 mm (3"), back wall on a 127 mm (5") radius.
- Depth: the number that sets your action ceiling. The governing relationship:
fingerboard-top height above body top
= neck heel thickness + fretboard thickness − pocket depth
A Tele bridge — especially a vintage ashtray with barrel saddles — has a fairly narrow useful height window. Rout the pocket 1 mm shallow, dry-assemble with the bridge and a string, measure where the saddles land in their travel, then take the last millimetre in 0.25 mm passes.
- Angle: 0°. Pocket floor and heel underside both dead flat and parallel to the body top. Verify with a straightedge and a digital angle gauge.
- Fit: hand push-fit, no side gap. A 0.05 mm feeler gauge should not enter alongside the heel.
4.6 Centreline discipline
Mark the centreline on the body blank before cutting the outline and on the neck blank before touching it. Refresh it after every planing pass. Every cavity, hole and template registration references it. An outline 1 mm off-centre is invisible; a neck pocket 1 mm off-centre puts your low E over the edge of the fingerboard.
4.7 Nut geometry
- Slot in the neck: typically 3.2 mm (1/8") wide, ~3.2 mm deep.
- String spacing: outer strings 3.0–3.5 mm inside each fingerboard edge, inner four spaced by the gap between strings, not by centres.
- Slot depth: with a capo at the 3rd fret, clearance between string and the top of the 1st fret should be 0.05–0.10 mm.
- Slots slope down toward the headstock, following the string path to its post.
4.8 Fret slot depth
Slot depth = tang depth + 0.1–0.25 mm. For medium-jumbo wire with a 1.3 mm tang, about 1.5 mm. Slot width 0.58 mm (0.023"). Cut the slots flat, radius the board, then re-run the saw — radiusing removes material at the edges and leaves the slots shallow there. Skipping the second pass is why frets lift at the ends.
Part 5 — Step-by-step build
Phase 0 — Plans and templates
- Buy a full-size dimensioned plan. Print at 100% and verify against a known dimension before you trust it.
- Make 6 mm MDF or acrylic templates: body outline, neck pocket, bridge pickup rout, neck pickup rout, control cavity, and neck outline.
- Check each template against the real part. Offer up the bridge plate, the neck pickup, the control plate, the pots.
- Mark the reference face and centreline on every template.
Phase 1 — Body blank
- Joint the mating edges of your body halves — no gap under a straightedge, closing without clamping force.
- Glue up with clamps alternating above and below. Look for squeeze-out along the whole joint.
- After 24 hours, scrape the glue line and flatten both faces (hand plane and winding sticks, or a thicknesser).
- Bring the blank to 45.5 mm, leaving 1 mm for final levelling.
- Mark the centreline, then transfer the outline.
Phase 2 — Body outline
- Bandsaw 2–3 mm outside the line.
- Fix the outline template registered on the centreline.
- Flush-trim in 2–3 shallow passes. Climb-cut where the grain wants to tear — the upper horn and the lower cutaway.
- Leave the edges square for now; the cavity routing needs a square reference.
Phase 3 — Neck pocket
- Fix the pocket template on the centreline. Check both pocket corners measure equal to a fixed reference point at the bridge end.
- Rout in 3–4 mm increments to 1 mm shy of target depth.
- Chisel the corners square — a 12.7 mm bit leaves 6.35 mm radii the heel will not enter.
- Test-fit the heel: hand push-fit, no side gap.
- Dry-assemble neck and bridge, measure fingerboard height over the body top, and take the last millimetre in 0.25 mm passes.
Phase 4 — Cavities
- Bridge pickup rout: 21.6 mm (0.850") deep, per Fender's published routing figure. This is noticeably deeper than a Strat rout — a Tele bridge pickup has a taller baseplate assembly and must be able to drop right down. Verify against your actual pickup with the bridge plate in place.
- Neck pickup rout: ~19 mm (3/4"), again verified against your pickup at its lowest adjustment. On a vintage Tele the neck pickup screws to the body through the rout floor, so the floor must be flat and clean.
- Control cavity: 30–32 mm deep, routed from the top, sized so the pots, switch and cap clear the underside of the control plate. On a vintage Tele the cavity is routed sideways from the pickup rout in a particular pattern — follow your plan.
- Channels: a 3.2 mm (1/8") channel from each pickup rout into the control cavity, and one from the control cavity toward the jack bore. A long aircraft bit is the alternative.
- Jack bore: on a Tele the jack sits in a cup pressed into the side of the lower bout. Drill the cup recess with a Forstner bit on the drill press with the body clamped on its side, then angle-bore into the control cavity. Go slowly — this bore breaks out into a cavity and grabby bits will tear the exit.
- Lightly break every cavity edge so the finish does not build a sharp ridge.
Phase 5 — Edges and (optional) contours
A vintage Telecaster is a slab body: no forearm bevel, no belly cut. Later and modern Teles often have both.
- If you want contours, mark and remove with a rasp or bandsaw, then refine with a spokeshave and scrapers. Work symmetrically and check by holding the body against your ribs.
- Roundover the perimeter with a 3.2 mm (1/8") bit for a vintage look, or 6.35 mm (1/4") for a softer modern edge.
- Sand 120 → 180 → 220. Grain-raise with a damp rag between the last two grits and sand back.
Phase 6 — Drilling the body
Drill press, body clamped, table checked square.
- Ferrule holes and bridge screw holes: see §4.4. Do these before anything else on the top, while the bridge is still located.
- Neck bolt holes: transfer from the neck plate. 4.2–4.5 mm through, countersunk.
- Strap buttons, control plate screws, neck pickup screws: 2 mm pilots. Transfer the control plate holes from the actual plate.
- Every screw into hardwood gets a pilot hole. Ash splits along its grain lines very readily.
Phase 7 — Neck blank and truss rod
- Plane the blank flat and square, quartersawn face to the sides. Centreline on both faces.
- Bandsaw or template-rout the neck outline oversize. Leave the heel and headstock outline until after fretting if you can — square surfaces are easier to clamp.

Truss rod channel: measure your rod. A dual-action rod typically wants 6.4–6.5 mm wide × 10–11 mm deep, cut on the centreline with a fence, in 2 mm passes.
- Vintage route: curved channel cut from the back, rod inserted, walnut skunk stripe glued over, planed flush. Vintage Teles adjust at the heel, which means unbolting the neck to adjust — historically accurate and practically annoying.
- Modern route (recommended): straight channel from the front, rod installed, fingerboard glued over the top, adjustment at the heel or headstock.
- Confirm the rod turns freely before gluing anything over it.
Phase 8 — Fingerboard
(Skip to Phase 9 if you are building a one-piece maple neck with frets set directly into the neck.)
- Thickness the board to about 8 mm.
- Slot the frets flat — mitre box with a 25.5" slotting template, or a CNC-slotted board. Depth stop per §4.8. Every slot cut from the same reference end.
- Taper: mark the nut width (41.3 or 42.8 mm) and the width at the last fret (typically 55.5–57 mm), join with a straightedge, plane or rout to the line.
- Inlays: dots between frets 3, 5, 7, 9, 12 (double), 15, 17, 19, 21, on the fingerboard centreline. Glue slightly proud, then level.
- Radius with a radius block, 80 → 120 → 180, long even strokes. Check with gauges at the nut, 5th, 12th and last fret — the radius must be the same everywhere.
- Re-run the fret saw to restore slot depth at the edges.
- Glue to the neck with two brad pins in fret slots to stop sliding, and a cambered caul matching your radius so pressure is even across the width. 12 hours.
Phase 9 — Headstock and neck carve
- Cut the headstock outline. Note the Telecaster's distinctive shape — narrower than a Strat's on vintage examples, with all six tuners in line.
- The Fender headstock is flat and in-plane with the fingerboard — no back-angle. The string break comes from stepping the headstock down to about 14.3 mm (0.563") and using a string tree. This is precisely why Fenders have string trees and Gibsons do not.
- Drill tuner holes on the drill press: 8.7 mm (11/32") vintage split-shaft, 10 mm most modern sealed. Check your actual tuners.
- Carve the neck. Mark depth targets — around 21 mm at the 1st fret, 22.5 mm at the 12th, adjusted to taste. A vintage Tele "U" profile is chunkier and rounder in the shoulders than a Strat "C". Remove wood with a spokeshave from the centre outward, facet the shoulders, then blend. Judge with your hand, not your eye.
- Shape the heel transition and blend into the headstock step.
- Sand 120 → 180 → 220 → 320, grain-raise, sand back.
Phase 10 — Fretting
- Check the fingerboard is straight with the truss rod neutral. Slight back-bow is acceptable; forward bow will worsen once frets go in.
- Bend the fret wire tighter than the board radius — roughly 2" smaller. This pulls the fret ends down instead of letting them lift.
- Cut each fret 3 mm over-length.
- Seat each fret: press with a matching radius caul, or hammer from the centre outward with a brass hammer — a few firm strikes, not many light ones. No gap under the crown anywhere.
- Wick a drop of thin CA into each fret end and wipe immediately.
- Nip the ends flush, then bevel at 35° with a fingerboard guard in place.
- Dress the ends — round every corner so nothing catches a fingertip. Half an hour of tedium that decides whether the guitar feels professional.
Phase 11 — Fretwork
- Set the neck dead straight, checked with a notched straightedge.
- Marker-pen every crown.
- Level with the 400 mm beam and 400 grit, long diagonal strokes both directions. Stop as soon as every crown shows a witness mark. Verify with the fret rocker across every three-fret group — any rock means a high fret remains.
- Recrown each fret until the flat spot is a thin centre line.
- Polish 400 → 800 → 1,500 → 2,500, then micro-mesh to 12,000, guard in place.
- Oil a rosewood or pau ferro board; a maple board gets finished with the neck.
Phase 12 — The nut
- Fit the blank to the slot with light friction and full bottom contact.
- Shape the top to the fingerboard radius plus ~1 mm.
- Mark string positions per §4.7, spacing by gaps.
- Cut each slot in stages. Start shallow, fit the string, capo at the 3rd fret, file until the 1st-fret clearance is 0.05–0.10 mm — then stop. Too deep means a new nut.
- Slots slope toward the headstock. Width ≈ string gauge + 0.05 mm.
- Shape the ends flush, polish, and set aside until after finishing.
Phase 13 — Finishing
- Mask the neck pocket, cavities, fret slots and (if rosewood) the fingerboard.
- Grain-fill ash properly. This is the step that decides whether your Tele looks built or thrown together. Two applications, sanded back flush, before any sealer.
- Sanding sealer, 2 light coats, sanded to 320.
- Colour coats built in many thin passes. Butterscotch blonde is a translucent finish — it shows every sanding scratch and every unfilled pore.
- Clear: 6–10 thin coats with the recommended flash time between them.
- Cure. Nitrocellulose needs 3–4 weeks before levelling. Rushing this is the most common finishing failure — the finish shrinks after polishing and your gloss goes flat.
- Wet level-sand 800 → 1,200 → 2,000 with a hard block and soapy water. Watch the edges.
- Compound and polish. Satin the neck with 0000 wool or a fine pad for a faster feel.
Phase 14 — Assembly
- Scrape finish out of the fret slots and the neck pocket.
- Press tuner bushings in, install tuners, align posts.
- Bolt the neck in progressively, tightening in a cross pattern. Snug, not brutal.
- Install ferrules, then the bridge plate.
- Install the jack cup and clip, strap buttons, string tree.
- Fit the nut — one small spot of glue, or none if the fit is right.
Phase 15 — Wiring
Standard modern Telecaster circuit (3-way: bridge / both / neck):
- Shield the cavities with copper tape, overlapping and soldering the seams.
- Mount the neck pickup in its rout with screws and tubing or springs; mount the bridge pickup to the bridge plate.
- Mount volume pot, tone pot and 3-way switch to the control plate.
- Connections:
- Bridge pickup hot → one switch input; neck pickup hot → the other switch input.
- Switch common → volume pot input lug (lug 3).
- Volume output (lug 2) → jack tip.
- Volume lug 1 → ground.
- Tone pot wiper → 0.047 µF cap → ground, fed from the volume input.
- All pickup grounds, both pot casings, the bridge plate ground and the jack sleeve → one star ground point. The bridge plate must be grounded; on a Tele the bridge pickup's own baseplate usually handles this, but verify with the meter.
- Before closing up: check continuity, confirm each pot reads ~250 kΩ end to end, and tap-test both pickups through an amp.
- Dress the wires so nothing is pinched when the control plate seats.
Vintage 1950s wiring uses a different 3-way arrangement (neck pickup with a fixed tone capacitor, neck + bridge blended, bridge alone) and a "blend" pot instead of a tone pot. It is charming and much less useful. Build modern wiring first.
Phase 16 — Setup
Fender's published factory specifications, used as targets. Fresh strings, tuned to pitch, and recheck between every step because each adjustment affects the others.
1. Neck relief. Capo the 1st fret, hold the low E at the last fret, measure between the top of the 8th fret and the bottom of the string:

On a vintage 3-saddle bridge each barrel carries two strings, so you set a compromise height per pair and follow the fingerboard radius across the three saddles.
3. Pickup height, pole piece to bottom of string with the last fret held down:

A Tele neck pickup under a chrome cover is easy to set too high — the string swing is widest there. If you hear warble or dead sustain, drop it.
4. Intonation. Compare the fretted 12th-fret note with the 12th-fret harmonic:
- Fretted note sharp → move the saddle back, away from the neck.
- Fretted note flat → move the saddle forward, toward the neck.
With a 3-saddle bridge you cannot get all six perfect. Angle each barrel so the two strings it carries share the error, prioritising the string you play open chords on most. Common practice: set the D/G barrel angled so G is slightly favoured, and accept a few cents on the D. If this bothers you, fit compensated brass barrels — they are angled from the factory and get you most of the way there.
5. Nut slots. Recheck 1st-fret clearance under full tension. If first-position open chords sound sharp, the slots are still too high.

Part 7 — The ten mistakes that ruin Telecaster builds
- Drilling ferrule holes off-perpendicular. Drill press, square table, backer board, no exceptions.
- Routing the bridge pickup cavity too shallow. 21.6 mm (0.850") is the published figure, and a shallow rout means a pickup you cannot lower.
- Setting pocket depth from a catalogue number instead of from your neck and bridge together.
- Drilling the bridge before checking lateral string alignment. A Tele plate has almost no correction room.
- Forgetting to re-cut fret slots after radiusing. Frets lift at the ends, permanently.
- Bending fret wire to the board's own radius rather than tighter.
- Under-filling ash grain before a translucent blonde finish. The pores telegraph through every coat.
- Polishing nitro before it has cured. Three weeks minimum, four is better.
- Flatsawn neck timber, or wood above 8% moisture content.
- Expecting a 3-saddle bridge to intonate perfectly. It cannot. Either accept the compromise, use compensated barrels, or fit a 6-saddle plate.
Part 8 — Frequently asked questions
Is a Telecaster easier to build than a Stratocaster? Generally yes. You skip the tremolo cavity, the through-body block slot, the rear spring rout and one pickup cavity — four of the operations most likely to go wrong. In exchange you take on six string-through ferrule holes that must be drilled perfectly perpendicular. Net: a Tele is the better first scratch build for most people.
How deep is a Telecaster bridge pickup rout? Fender's published figure is 21.6 mm (0.850"), noticeably deeper than a Stratocaster pickup rout. Always verify against your actual pickup with the bridge plate installed — the pickup must be able to drop to its lowest setting without bottoming out.
How deep should the neck pocket be? Vintage spec is 15.9 mm (5/8"); current production often runs 17.3–17.5 mm (0.680–0.690"). The right depth for your build is whatever puts the fingerboard top at a height where your bridge saddles sit mid-travel. Rout 1 mm shallow, dry-assemble, measure, then finish the cut in 0.25 mm passes.
What size are Telecaster string ferrule holes? 7.94 mm (5/16") for the string bore, counterbored to 9.53 mm (3/8") on the back face for the ferrule flange. Spacing must be transferred directly from your bridge plate rather than taken from a published number.
What is the Telecaster scale length? 647.7 mm (25.5"), the same as a Stratocaster. The 12th fret sits at exactly half — 323.85 mm from the nut face.
Can I avoid drilling string-through holes? Yes. Fit a top-loader bridge plate, where strings anchor in the plate itself. Fender produced top-loaders in 1959, so it is period-legitimate as well as considerably easier.
Why can't I get perfect intonation with a vintage bridge? Because three barrel saddles serve six strings, and each pair needs a different length. Compensated brass barrels — angled at the factory — get you most of the way. A modern 6-saddle plate solves it outright at the cost of vintage looks.
Which body wood should I use? Swamp ash is the classic Tele timber: bright, open-grained, needs grain filling, and looks superb under a translucent blonde. Alder is cheaper, lighter-grained, easier to finish, and closer to a "modern Fender" voice. Pine is what the earliest Teles used — soft, light, dents easily, and full of character.
Do I need a neck angle or a shim? No. Pocket floor and neck heel are both flat and parallel to the body top — 0°. If you end up needing a shim, your pocket depth was wrong; a shim is a legitimate fix for that, not a design feature.
What is the hardest part? Fretwork, closely followed by the ferrule drilling. Levelling, crowning and polishing frets and then cutting the nut is where playability is decided, and it is a feel you develop over a few necks rather than something you read once.
